Because sometimes, life’s best adventures start with a simple decision: to visit a friend. Not just any kind of friend, but one of those daring friends — or 'danger friends', as I like to call them — the kind that enjoys extreme living. Like, living in a van in Norwegian winter to go ice climbing all season. Such a romantic idea from afar. A little different from up close. But here I am, in the cold. Living the van life. Which, to be clear, absolutely includes going outside during the dark, long and frosty nights. Not to check whether there are any Northern lights, oh no, but to take down my pants and squat to take a pee in the snow while, quite literally, freezing my ass off.
And I absolutely loved this life. True, there has been some shivering and minor frostbite, maybe some slight frustration with the cold. But there's nothing like the freedom and joy of outdoor living. And learning to ice climb has been an absolute blast!
I've scribbled down a few notes along the way, on surviving the bitter cold and the climbs we did. You'll find them here.
